Flex

Flex Ratings Are a Guess Until Tested

Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, and Extra Stiff are industry conventions, not standardized measurements — a "Stiff" shaft from one manufacturer can play differently from another brand's "Stiff." Flex should be chosen based on how the shaft loads and releases through your specific transition and tempo, which is why flex alone should never be the only variable considered in a fitting.

Weight

Weight Drives Timing More Than the Flex Sticker

Shaft weight influences how quickly you can load and release the club through the downswing. Lighter shafts (under 60g in drivers, under 100g in irons) generally help golfers with slower tempo generate more clubhead speed, but can reduce feel and control for faster-swinging players. Heavier shafts add stability and often tighten dispersion for stronger players, at some cost to raw speed.

Choosing Between Steel and Graphite

Steel shafts are heavier, more consistent from shaft to shaft, and typically preferred in irons and wedges by players who want maximum feedback and control. Graphite shafts are lighter, dampen vibration more, and are the standard choice in drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids where added clubhead speed matters more than raw feedback.

Torque

Why Torque Matters Most in Graphite

Torque measures a shaft's resistance to twisting during the swing, expressed in degrees. Lower torque shafts resist twisting and tend to suit faster, more aggressive swings; higher torque shafts flex and release more, which can help slower swings square the face through impact. Torque is far more relevant in graphite shafts than steel, since steel's construction naturally resists twisting already.

Kick Point

The Bend Point Nobody Asks About

Kick point (or bend point) describes where along the shaft the most flex occurs. A low kick point tends to promote a higher launch angle; a high kick point produces a lower, more penetrating ball flight. Kick point works alongside flex and weight — none of these variables should be considered in isolation, which is exactly why launch monitor testing beats spec-sheet guessing.
